WOOD HEDGEHOG

Fruit body: cap up to 15 cm, fleshy and substantially irregular, margin stays inrolled for long time, surface is matt to velvety and dry, in shades of cream, yellow and orange colour. Hymenium consists of fragile, whitish spikes up to 0.4 cm long, becoming darker as fruitbody matures. Stem is eccentric, up to 8x4 cm, whitish to cream, darkens to orange and brown hues when touched.

Microscopy: spores globose and smooth, 6.5-9x5.5-7.5 µm, Basidia are mostly with 3 or 4 spores.

Flesh: whitish, fragile, darkens to shades of brown when bruised, somewhat  hot taste, later with a hint of bitterness.

Habitat: season summer and autumn in various woods. Very common.

Edibility: edible, but younger specimens are of better quality.
